Alexis is the director of the Biophilium where she leads research expeditions and intensive study sessions for artists to learn about ecology and related topics. In 2026 she is hosting courses on Biological Transformation, Non-Human Sex, Wildlife Navigation, Birds, Mushrooms, Ecological Restoration, Botany and Mourning Ritual.
Places in these 10-day webinars are available through the Biophilium.

Alexis is always looking for opportunities to encourage artists to develop and strengthen their creative personas and ecological knowledge. She is available to teach short or long courses on art informed by science and science informed by art.
Other art topics I have lectured on: Live insects in art, neurology and consciousness in art, transgenic art, art that eavesdrops on non-human sensory experience.
Other science topics I have lectured on: Inter-species symbiotic relationships and non-human communication.
I have experience leading practical workshops on sterile tech for DIY mushroom culturing, digital microscopy and fermentation.
These talks are tailored for creative people but are available to everyone. |

TEACHING STATEMENT
I am an educator who specializes in art informed by science and science applied by art.
My lectures teach ecology, introduce contemporary natural philosophies and encourage students to identify and perform as actualized members of their communities by demonstrating how to connect with interdisciplinary practitioners.
As a teacher my main goal is to give my students permission to indulge in deep hyper focused learning of any topic that interests them. I enthusiastically model my curiosity and invite others to geek out with me. I especially encourage my students to explore ways to express the non monetary values of life and to experiment with manifesting their own creative personas, bodies of knowledge and modes of communication.
I celebrate work made by artists and poets who seek knowledge, who engage in observing the world through a specialized lens whether it is completely novel, or an established line of thinking.
I specialize in showcasing contemporary art made in collaboration with live organisms especially art that demonstrates cutting edge scientific theory, illustrates interspecies connections, non human experience and promotes land stewardship. I encourage my students to direct the attention of their audiences to the natural world and to apply science in communities to lead public understanding and care of ecology.
My work assists artists to direct the attention of their viewers to ecology, to the meaning of wildness and our relationships to it. My classes are often designed to lead artists to create ritual that supports conservation or mourning as surrogate cultural actions.
I have over a decade of experience connecting scientists and artists and currently host 50 science lectures a year for biologists to present their current research directly to small groups of artists.
As the director of the Biophilium I have experience:
- Designing and leading research expeditions and intensive study sessions.
- Liaisoning between and holding space for artists and scientists to express themselves, their enthusiasm, points of view and insight.
- Leading biology and wildlife appreciation workshops in laboratories and in the field.
From this experience I have gained a large body of knowledge on bioart, and on biology especially ecology, mycology and ornithology.
Strengths: Asking questions, interpreting science and art and making cross disciplinary connections. Noticing things in the forest. Holding space for weirdoes to be amazing.
